The name “Ships that Pass” was taken from The Theologian’s Tale: Elizabeth which forms part of a larger collection of poems entitled Tales of a Wayside Inn by good old Henry Wordsworth Longfellow, first published in 1863.
“Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing,
Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness;
So on the ocean of life we pass and speak one another,
Only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence.”
Nowadays the phrase “like Ships that pass” is used to describe an intense, often physical, relationship between two people who meet for a brief, fleeting moment in time and then part ways never to meet again – but never to be forgotten. Much like this little sampler which is swiftly stitched but full of pleasure while it lasts.
