Leave A Kiss
£14.40
The text for this sampler is taken from the Elizabethan poem “Song: To Celia” by Ben Johnson, playwright and actor, and describes the deep love existing between the speaker and his lover which transcends all normal bounds. Shortly after publication the words were set to music by an anonymous composer and it quickly became a popular song in ale houses and bawdy taverns throughout Merrie England particularly at closing time when the beer had been flowing freely since lunch time.
“Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss within the cup,
And I’ll not ask for wine”
