A hagioscope, or “squint” in architectural terms, is a small opening cut through the chancel arch or wall of a church to enable members of the congregation seated in an aisle or side chapel to obtain a better view of services taking place.
A Long Dog squint, however, is slightly different. It’s shaped like a giant keyhole which enables stitchers to get a proper eyeful of the action when one of the elephants knocks over the vase, the unicorns lose their balance and all the motifs come tumbling down like dominoes into a pile of thread on your cloth.
