Turretz

£14.40

Turrets are those little towers that jut out from buildings, such as a castle, fortress or city wall, and can occasionally be found clinging like a vertiginous barnacle to the spires of ecclesiastical buildings too. They’re usually positioned on prominent corners and can be very ornamental and highly detailed edifices.

The Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi, seemed particularly fond of the turret. His breathtaking Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is peppered with the little darlings in all shapes and sizes. Long Dog, however, has only managed to pack in 14 to this design because space was at a premium, besides which we couldn’t get planning permission for any more than that. The building regulations are getting very strict about such appendages these days.

Castle turrets sprang originally from the defensive need for greater visibility as they enabled the occupying garrison to get a better line of sight and thus spot possible attackers more rapidly. Turrets are usually rounded, which makes these structures very robust and less easily damaged under attack.

But there’s a downside to all this. When it comes to converting turrets into guest bedrooms, they’re far from ideal as there are no straight walls to put a bed against and hanging framed Long Dogs is an absolute nightmare as you might imagine.

This enchanting design comes to you as a pdf download riding on the head of an arrow which has been let fly with amazing precision straight into your inbox, with an almost inaudible rustle of its fletchings. Practically guaranteed to set your heart all a quiver and your pulses racing. Well, it’s not everyday you get shot at, is it?
